What We Do

hiv/aids immigration project
LACLJ has a legal fellow through Loyola Law School who created the HIV/AIDS Immigration Project (“HIP”). This project serves the HIV/AIDS immigrant community of Los Angeles County. In 1993, Congress effectively barred foreign nationals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS from entering and residing in the United States. HIP’s goals include assisting those afflicted with HIV/AIDS in preparing the I-601 Waiver to Grounds of Inadmissibility as well accompanying immigration applications, including visa applications and family-based petitions.

Since many of the clients that this project aims to serve may have entered into the United States illegally, the project will also provide legal advocacy to those who cannot apply for legal status through traditional, family-based petitions. Where appropriate, HIP will provide legal advocacy to to attain relief for qualified clients under VAWA, U-Visa, and asylum-based petitions.
