| In addition, attorneys may assist eligible undocumented persons with their immigration cases under VAWA. Because LACLJ does not receive federal funds from the Legal Services Corporation, LACLJ is in the unique position of being able to serve undocumented persons. The center has created a special project focused on providing integrated services to immigrant victims of domestic violence. We provide assistance with immigration matters under the Violence Against Women Act (“VAWA”), family law matters, as well as housing and government benefits law, all in one location for the ease and convenience of our clients.
LACLJ also operates the Default Assistance Project (“DAP”), a partnership with the Los Angeles Superior Court Resource Center for Self-Represented Litigants. DAP staff assist self-represented litigants who have been unable to complete their family law cases. These litigants often pay hundreds or thousands of dollars to document preparers, yet are unable to finalize their divorce or custody cases due to errors or incomplete documents. DAP operates at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, and assists litigants by triaging files, providing advice and counsel and preparing paperwork to reduce frustration and finalize their cases.
