Position:  Family Law Attorney

Summary:

The Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (LACLJ) seeks a part-time (60-70%) Attorney to assist survivors of domestic violence who are receiving benefits under the CalWORKs program.  The Attorney will primarily assist low-income clients in family law matters, including custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, and domestic violence restraining orders.

LACLJ has been providing free legal assistance to low-income residents of Los Angeles for over 35 years and currently provides assistance in family, housing, and immigration (U-Visa, VAWA, and SIJS only) law.

Qualifications:

• J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school.
• Active membership in the California State Bar.
• Demonstrated knowledge of family law with one to three years litigation experience. (Housing Law knowledge a plus)
• Fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
• Previous experience working with domestic violence survivors.
• Demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
• Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
• Ability to work successfully with people from diverse backgrounds.

Essential Functions:

• Conduct client intakes and case assessments.
• Represent clients in negotiation settlements, court hearings and trials.
• Perform legal research, draft legal documents and conduct discovery.
• Coordinate with social service providers to conduct community outreach and education.
• Develop materials relating to community education and outreach events.

Rate of Pay: $25 per hour/25 hours per week
