Housing Law
LACLJ’s Housing Rights Unit averts homelessness and preserves and protects safe and affordable housing by providing legal services, advocacy, and representation to low-income tenants living in substandard housing and facing unlawful evictions. LACLJ delivers customized individual services through one-on-one counseling and education presentations, particularly to low-income families, immigrants, and monolingual Spanish speakers.
Specifically, the Unit provides legal advocacy in housing law matters including:
- Legal representation
- Document preparation
- Protecting and preserving government subsidized housing
- Alleviating slum conditions through outreach, advocacy, and litigation
- Community outreach and education
- Collaboration with community-based organizations and government agencies
The Housing Rights Unit’s primary vehicle for delivering services is the Eastside Housing Rights Clinic (“EHRC”). Held twice a week, the EHRC provides a unique venue where low-income persons facing eviction, substandard housing conditions, or other housing problems, can receive free legal services from a trained advocate. LACLJ created the clinic seven years ago because tenants had nowhere to go to ask questions face-to-face with an advocate for free on basic issues like how to respond to notices, evictions, and habitability problems. LACLJ has staffed the clinic with its own attorneys, paralegals and support staff, as well as volunteers from local law schools and from the community.
To make an appointment for services, please call (323) 980-3500. Geographic and income restrictions may apply based on funding sources, and we may not be able to provide assistance to everyone.
