Special Projects
HSA Domestic Violence Project
LACLJ has partnered with Human Service Association (HSA), a social service agency in the City of Bell Gardens that provides services and emergency assistance to domestic violence survivors. As part of this project, we provide off-site visits in Southeast Los Angeles to domestic violence victims. A LACLJ Family Law Attorney schedules appointments twice per month to provide advice and counsel and other legal assistance in family law matters. The LACLJ attorney may represent clients in divorce, paternity, or restraining order matters focusing on issues of custody, visitation, child support, spousal support, and community property issues. In addition, the LACLJ attorney provides presentations and outreach to HSA clients providing general information on their legal rights, and the legal ramifications of domestic violence and how it may affect custody and visitation.
El Monte Landlord/Tenant Project
The El Monte Landlord-Tenant Counseling Project serves the residents of El Monte by providing them access to legal information regarding their housing rights in order to empower tenants to make informed decisions and avail themselves of their rights. Housed in El Monte, an LACLJ staff member provides information to both landlords and tenants on basic housing rights and responsibilities. The El Monte Coordinator also conducts workshops, presentations, and seminars at local organizations and public agencies on housing topics.
South Asian Domestic Violence Project
Surviving domestic violence is a challenge. Compound that challenge with language barriers, feelings of social isolation, and lack of family support, and it can seem like an impenetrable wall that impedes many South Asian immigrant women. Researchers found that among South Asian women living in the U.S., over 40% surveyed reported being a victim of domestic violence. LACLJ provides culturally competent legal services to low-income South Asian domestic violence clients referred directly from South Asian Network (SAN), Asian Pacific Women’s Center (APWC), the South Asian Bar Association, and other organizations. We are one of the only organizations able to provide legal assistance to these women regardless of their immigration status. Additionally, we provide technical assistance to our partner organizations through substantive and professional development trainings.
